A Man Leads a Lamb to the Sanctuary at Dawn

It is morning in ancient Israel. The dew is still on the grass. And down a dusty road, a man is walking toward the sanctuary. He is not walking quickly. He is not walking proudly. He is walking the way a person walks when his conscience is heavy. Beside him, on a short rope, comes a lamb. A young lamb. Without spot, without blemish — the best of the flock. He has chosen it carefully, because the law requires that it be perfect. No temple or similar structure must be behind them.
